To our patient families and supporters, we can only imagine how hard it is to see your loved ones in the hospital. We hold you in our hearts and hope that a few words from Annia’s mother, Sarah, resonates.
Our daughter, Annia was diagnosed in utero with an ASD (hole in the heart). She was in the NICU at UW for 17 days and while their they discovered she had an enlarged heart, anonlymous drainage of the upper left pulmonary vein, meaning a pulmonary vein wasn't connected to a value, instead it went elsewhere and a few other issues also. Shortly after her release home, she ended up back down in Seattle at Childrens and there is where we worked hand in hand with her care team to get her to the place she's in now. It's been a long road, lots of endless nights, worry and concern for the tomorrows ahead. Our sweet girl faced other issues as she went into and come out of surgeries and we're still learning about her and what makes her work. She now is 18months old, has had several surgeries and still works hard every day to keep with her siblings. She does have short limits we are noticing, she attends OT, speech, feeding therapies and is closely watched by Childrens even though we live all the way up near the Canadian border. But I can tell you one thing: we never felt alone.
Her OB, and even the nurses there have become like family to us, they not only care for our child, but they show care and attention to me too! And sometimes I've gone in with Annia with so many questions and observations, and found that when we have left, I came out feeling like, my heart had been tended too also. Their constant reminders that I can do this, even with 4 kids, and one with autism, it's definitely been a balancing act. They have been incredible each step of the way reminding me that 'I've got this! I can do this! My daughter needs me, therefore I am more than capable of stepping up the plate because I am her mama.'
Parents, if I could leave you with one word of encouragement, it would be this. You are enough!!! You can do this, and you can do this well! Sometimes you won't believe the choices you have to make, or the things you’re seeing or hearing, but in the darkest moments, when it all comes down to it, that baby is yours. It's part of you. And you know what that child is make of! They are stronger than you think. And with every step you take your setting the example for their greatness. You are enough! And when you don't feel like it, say it to yourself again and again. And turn to your care team in those moments of desperation and they will be there, when you just don't have the strength. Seattle Childrens saved my child, over and over again. We are incredibly blessed to have her now and not only that, but have her thriving. It'll be a long road, a forever one for her, but I can face tomorrow with less worry and concern because I know, I am not alone. Thank you Childrens Seattle for giving us hope.
